Fonts in Herefordshire by George Marshall

George Marshall was one of the most distinguished members and benefactors of the Woolhope Club. He died on 11 December 1950 aged 81. His obituary appeared in the Club’s 1950 Transactions, pages 200 to 201, and included a photograph. His father, George William, was a Herald and a distinguished genealogist and antiquarian who had bought Sarnesfield Court in 1895. Although George was born in Somerset, like other incomers to Herefordshire he became immersed in its history and published many papers in the Club’s Transactions. After a stroke in 1946 he was still able to complete a volume on the history of Hereford cathedral and to write his monograph Fonts in Herefordshire which was published in 3 parts in 1949, 1950 and 1951. The majority of the photographs of the fonts were taken by F. C. Morgan, another distinguished Woolhope Club member.  More than 200 Herefordshire parishes are represented, about 80%, pre-19th century fonts only being included.

The organisation of the 3 printed parts was not straightforward; a Contents page does not appear until part 3 but for the website version it has been moved to the start of part 1; it indicates the order in which the fonts are presented i.e. not by parish name but by style. Each parish was given a number based on this order. An alphabetical index of parish name versus parish number was provided at the end of part 3. To make finding a given parish easier this has been reproduced separately below. The pages of photographs were scattered throughout the three parts in order of parish number, but as there are sometimes 6 photographs per page the text for a particular parish can be separated by some distance from the photograph. The text and photographs are therefore in different files which can easily be scrolled through.
